The old badge...
The factory fitted TF badge is in
two parts, the base is plastic, which has been vacuum deposited aluminium
coated
to look like chrome, and it's very good quality. The MG graphic bit
is stuck to this chrome octagonal base, and here's the problem, the graphic is a sheet of aluminium which has
been anodised and dyed and should have been
chemically sealed in but it has not been. The dyes fade over time with ultra violet light,
and contrary to popular belief, the old badges do not de-laminate,
there is nothing to de-laminate. Spraying with clear lacquer only
protracts the ultra violet light damage.
The new badge...
This is a replacement stick on badge for the TF only, for the front and rear, but
obviously could be used in other locations. They are made
from a soft resin and are approximately 1.5mm thick at the centre
tapering out at the edges, they measure 65mm across the octagon
faces. Colours available are brown/cream, and
black/silver. They stick on top of the graphic in the original equipment
badge. And here's the good bit, you do not have to remove your original badge to
apply them. These badges replicate the quality of the older F badge,
which is a two part flexible polyurethane coated badge which does
not suffer from fading like the TF badges do.
Please note, these badges will only fit the OEM badge, they are too
small to fit over the enamel type badges.
These badges have been made possible by a member of SWMGF. A donation will be made into their club funds
for every badge sold.
How to replace...
The badge can be left
in-situ on the car, any lacquer that may have been applied must be
removed. Do not scrape the surface of the graphic with anything
metallic as this will leave
ridges, and be very careful not to mark the chrome surround. Clean
off the surface to within an inch of its life with alcoholic wipes or brake cleaning spray. The badges are best fitted warm, so careful application of a hairdryer on the old
and new badge prior to application would be advisable in cold weather. Line
up the badge and press firmly in place, paying particular attention to
the edges. Stand back and admire your handy work.
